Day 181 - 27th of February

天気:曇り
Against expectations, it did not rain today, which meant that I was at least active during the afternoon… I tried to get up at 9:30, but ended up falling back to sleep, finally getting up at about 11. Hugo was still in bed, so I had breakfast, and then went out to the lounge, and played Final Fantasy Tactics A2 on my DS; it was really great to be able to read most of the text. Shortly after 12, I went up to ask Ash if she still wanted to go to Yamada Lake. She did, so we decided to leave at 1; Rachel came along too. Since Ash doesn’t have a bike, we walked, and it was a very pleasant walk; the sun was out and it was warm. Soon enough we reached the lake, and circumnavigated it clockwise. There were many cats out enjoying the fine weather, much to the girls’ delight. We walked through the Queensland fauna exhibition (which was very familiar to me), and then made our way around past the bamboo grove. As we approached it, we noticed a large group of people with telescopic cameras on tripods set up. We were unsure of why they were all gathered around this spot but were soon to find out. From out of the trees came 1, 2, 3 beautiful green breasted, purple-winged birds that might have been parrots or doves; it was hard to tell. Straight away we knew that they were the photographers’ focus, as a flurry of flashing noises filled the air; I didn’t get a very decent shot since I was so far back. We figured that they were a rare species, or only came here during a certain time of year. It was really cool to be able to see them; the photographer’s must have put food there to coax them out. We came just at the right time, as they soon flew off.

We continued on to the plum grove, to find the ground a patchwork of pink and white. There were still a lot of flowers on the trees, but not nearly as many as the other day; yesterday’s rain had not been kind. It was still a very pretty sight, and I couldn’t help but to take another round of photos. We ended up spending about two hours in the park, walking through the woods, going out to the pagoda on the lake, and finally making our way back round the lake to the south exit; it was a lot of fun. Feeling hungry, Ash suggested we go to かっぱ寿司 (Kappazushi), a conveyor belt sushi restaurant. Since I had never been, and hadn’t had sushi in a while, I thought, why not; Rachel was keen too. It was only a short walk from where we were too, on the highway. I was really amazed by the set up; three lots of conveyor belts coming out from the kitchen, surrounded by booths. And basically, as soon as you sat down you could start eating, taking what you like off the conveyor belt.

Pretty much all the selections were 105 each, with some items (like the desserts) being a bit more expensive; calculating the bill was just a matter of counting the number of plates. They mostly served 握り寿司 (Nigirizushi – lit. “hand-formed sushi), which is basically an oblong mound of rice, with a bit of wasabi, and topping draped over it. This could be some sort of fish, including salmon and tuna, octopus, roe, eel, squid, shrimp, or sometimes egg. There was also 稲荷寿司 (Inarizushi), which is a pouch of deep fried tofu filled with rice, and takoyaki, the octopus-filled dumplings. If you wanted to order something in particular, you could a touch screen system to make your selection, which is exactly what Rachel did; she wanted to try takoyaki. It was promptly delivered to our table on the back of a mini Shinkansen that came straight from the kitchen; no need for waiters. I was just content with the selection that came around. I really liked the Inarizushi, and the eel Nigirizushi. I also got a dessert; a sort of tiramisu pudding. Considering how small the portions are, I was full after 6 plates. As Ash explained, it probably has something to do with the break between servings, allowing your stomach to “catch up”.

Feeling very satisfied, we paid and left; I’ll have to go back again sometime. Actually, Saigou Sensei told our class about a really good sushi place past Yamada Lake, which is, in his opinion far, superior to Kappazushi; have to check it out. Ash wanted to go to the uni, and do some grocery shopping, so we walked back down the highway, towards Midori. On the way, I was informed of what, or rather who, Don Quijote was; a fictional character of Spanish literature written in the 1600’s. Apparently it’s really well known novel, though I’ve never heard of it; I’ll have to try and find it and read it now. Anyway, we walked over to the uni, to find it still open, and went to the CIE. Ash was expecting a parcel, and was disappointed when she found out it hadn’t arrived; it’ll probably be there on Monday. Having nothing else to do at the uni, we went on to Fresco, and the Lawson 100 store (recently converted from the 99 store), and I picked up a few things. When we finally got home it was after 6. I stayed in the kitchen for a while and chatted with Simon, then went down to my room and read some more. Finally feeling a bit hungry again, I went up and made dinner at 8; gyudon.

After cleaning at 9 (it was Ash’s week, but Rachel and I also chipped in), we contemplated on what we should do, considering Katie and Sarah were still out; they had gone to Kyoto today. We didn’t want to watch firefly without them, so Ash invited the two of us back up to her room to figure out something to watch on her laptop. I suggested we watch Hetalia, and Rachel was immediately taken by the idea, having never seen it before; Ash was more than eager to introduce it to her. So we got set up on the futon, laptop on the table, and proceeded to watch the entirety of the first season; 26 episodes. Keep in mind the episodes are only five minutes each, so we finished up just after midnight. Katie came back in that time, having gone to eat at a Mexican restaurant; that would have been great. She soon went to Sarah’s room, leaving just the three of us. I was really tired by the end of it, and went straight to bed.

Day 180 - 26th of February

11:31pm セミナーハウス

天気:雨天

Well all good things come to an end, including the beautiful sunny weather. Today was a miserable rainy day, although it still wasn’t that cold; I guess that’s something. Anyway, I didn’t let the rain stop me from having a good day… I got up just before my alarm was about to go off at 7:50. For some reason, I almost always manage to do that; I must have a very good internal clock. I got ready, and then made my way to uni. I decided to ride, even though it was raining; this decision was partially due to the fact that there were no more umbrellas to borrow. It really wasn’t raining that heavily anyway, and I was wearing a jacket. I met Mori Sempai on the way, and we rode into uni together. Getting to class, we basically spent the 50 minutes revising for the lesson test on Monday; I’m looking forward to it… Then it was time for Reading and Writing, we again started off with a speech, and then sensei informed us of the oldest road in Japan; near Nara!!! I really, really want to go and check it out; he’s given us all the information, and recommended cherry blossom season. Saigou sensei is great; I always take away a lot from his classes. I was so hungry after class, and decided I might as well go home for lunch, since my next class wasn’t until 1:15; I wouldn’t have done this if I didn’t have a bike.

I did my homework first (this way I would get it done fast since I was so hungry), and then tucked into lunch; the usual. I had a little nap afterwards, and then it was time to head back to uni once more; still raining. In Gender and Sexuality, the Professor has been letting us watch the Olympics for the first 10-15 minutes of class. Today was the last day of the women’s figure skating and we got to watch 安藤美姫 (Miki Ando), dressed as Cleopatra; she was really good. Then we got stuck into it. After class, we went down to his office to pay for the Takarazuka tickets, which have been successfully secured; can’t wait! Then I was home time again; this time for the rest of the weekend; yay. I went up to the kitchen to eat a mandarin, and caught the end of the women’s figure skating; or more likely a reply. I spent the rest of the afternoon doing well, not much actually. Just when I started to get into Deltora Quest again, I realised it was already time to go to sentou; a few days earlier Yuji had told Hugo and I that he was planning a trip today. I admired Hugo’s enthusiasm, being his first time to a sentou. It ended up just being Yuji, Hugo and I.

Since we all had bikes, of course we rode; still raining. I had let Hugo know all the “rules” of the bathhouse, and Yuji also helped to explain things. We got there just after 6, and stayed for about an hour; so relaxing. I got to see another Yazuka, though his tattoos weren’t nearly as impressive as the last guys; he only had them covering his arms. Hugo seemed to enjoy himself, although the heat of the water made him feel a little out of it; does the same thing to me. I think it’s something you really have to get used too; it’s so hard to spend any longer in there without starting to feel dizzy. Riding back, I relished the feeling of the rain hitting me in the face. Yuji didn’t share my enjoyment, holding his red umbrella over his head; I’m always amazed when people can ride and hold an umbrella at the same time. When we got back, I went into the lounge, and watched a bit of The Fifth Element. Biancha had confiscated the lounge, so no Firefly tonight; oh well.

I soon went up to make dinner, which turned out nicely. I diced up some chicken, put it with some onions, and pasta sauce, then added two eggs, before putting it on top of spaghetti and sprinkling it with cheese; I could become a chef yet. I doubt it though; I just like having fun with food. I stayed in the kitchen and talked with the girls for a while, and then went down with Rachael to watch Episode Denzel: On the way to a Smile (an FFAC spin-off), in the lounge. Biancha, Liz, and Will were watching Edward Scissor-hands, and I couldn’t help but be a little distracted; I love that movie. I ended up watching the last 30 minutes of it, laughing as Biancha was moved to tears by it. Then I watched some more of FFACC with Rachael before calling it a night. After my shower I realised that the top of my right foot was no longer numb. I had just gotten so used to it, that I hadn’t even noticed the change. Feeling it now, it’s still a little strange, but much better than it was; I’m on the road to full recovery, I hope. Well, that’ll do me. I don’t have very much planned for the weekend; might go out somewhere. Most importantly, I have to study for my lesson test…

Day 164 - 10th of February

11:31pm セミナーハウス
天気:雨天
I’m feeling much better today; on a swift road to recovery. It was a rainy day today, and the air was saturated in mist; so it wasn’t that cold. It only seemed to rain when I was inside, and I managed to escape getting wet all together. After my Speaking class, I went practice koto for the hour break I had; I feel confident about tomorrow. Then I had to rush back over to get to Reading and Writing. The class today was much better than Monday’s; what a relief. So perhaps, we’ll only have one really intense lesson a week, and then the rest will be slower-paced. I was able to squeeze in lunch between Reading and Writing, and Onna to Otoko. I thought about having Makkas, but was good and ended up having 掻き揚げ丼 (Kakiage don – shrimp and vegetable fritters on rice) from the cafeteria; I really liked it. Today’s Onna to Otoko class was slightly tedious; professor Hester can be somewhat abstract at times. I got through it though, and afterwards, made my way to Kirindo and Fresco before returning home.

It was almost 4 when I got back, but I busied myself vacuuming, changing the linen, and making the futon. Then I got a chance to talk with Mum and Ben; they’ve been getting rain too. Well, more like floods actually; most rain in 100 years!!! At about 6, I left my room with the intention of cooking dinner, but ended up talking with Simon for an hour; not that this was an inconvenience. When I did get to the kitchen, I decided to make stew, so that meant letting it cook for an hour. In the mean time, I did some reading, and transferred film from my video camera. Then I went up to the dining room and conversed with Ash; she’s just getting over a cold now too. Desperate to eat, I spooned myself a good portion just before 8, buttered some toast, and I was set. There was a great travel program on TV. They had gone to Yamagata prefecture in northern Honshuu, and the snow covered landscape was magical. They stayed at many hotsprings, saw heaps of waterfalls (one of which was almost frozen), and went on a river cruise. Definitely a place I want to visit; so many places I want to visit!

After dinner, and an apple, I talked with Asami for a while, and through our conversation, inevitably invited her to my concert tomorrow. Katie, Ash, and now Asami, and I will be leaving at 12 for Moriguchi station; I’m looking forward to it. I’ll shave in the morning, and get out my suit pants and dress shirt, and I guess I’ll wear my black boots; they’re the most formal things I have. So yeah, got back downstairs, and decided to pick up Deltora Quest again; I really have neglected it. I got a knock on the door, and it was Asami, looking for Hugo; unfortunately for her, he was out. Soon after she left, he came back soaking wet, but only for a very short period, as he was promptly pressured into going out for a drink; he’s still not back. I managed to get up to chapter 4, and it was really cool because I recognised a grammar point we’d just learnt today in class. And, I now have over 600 words on the vocab list! Satisfied for tonight, I went up to snack, and then found Rachael in the computer room, and talked with her for a while. She showed me her hamlet, and described to me her life growing up there; I want to go England so badly. Feeling tired, I said goodnight, showered, and here I am. Hugo just got back, so I guess it’s time for sleep…

Day 139 - 16th of January

10:12pm セミナーハウス
天気:晴れ
A nice clear day; not that I appreciated much of it. Yes, I woke up in the afternoon; again! I think today topped the lazy charts; seriously. I had breakfast (the failure pancakes I made a while ago, which actually turned out to taste fine), then spent the rest of the afternoon playing my DS, occasionally switching over to my laptop. At around 6 I read some more Deltora Quest, until I gave into my hunger, and went up and made dinner; scrambled eggs, toast, and rice. There was a really interesting movie on TV; 時をかける少女 (toki wo kakeru shoujo – “The girl who leapt through time”). It’s a 1983 live action movie based on a novel of the same name. Admittedly, I was more than a little confused for the most of it, but I enjoyed the music, and the setting, so I watched it all, as people slowly filtered out of the kitchen; I was the last one there. I came back down, read some more, exercised, and then showered. Tomorrow going to Nijo Castle...

Day 138 - 15th of January

11:02pm セミナーハウス
天気:曇り
Today was another half-day; got up at 11:30. After breakfast, I did the laundry, and hand washed my new jumper, turning my hands to ice. The sun only reaches my balcony after noon anyway, so it wouldn’t have made very much difference if I’d gotten the laundry out earlier in the day. At around 2:30, I made a quick visit to Sanko, to get bread and milk, and also mailed postcards at the nearby post office. I had lunch after returning, and after that, talked with Mum. Ben and Dad were back from Jamboree, but Ben was sleeping (totally wiped out), and Dad was mowing the lawn (typical), so I didn’t get to talk with them; oh well, hopefully tomorrow. I got the washing in at about 4, and hang it up inside, as I have to do all the time now since it’s too cold, and the sun is too weak. I went up and made dinner at 7. It was sliced chicken, in sauce with crushed Ritz crackers; lolz, aren’t I avant-garde.

The crackers really helped soak up the excess liquid. That, on top of spaghetti, and garlic bread as a side and I was set. I talked with Ash and Katie for a while, making plans for next week. After that, I came back down and read some more of Deltora Quest. I’m up to chapter three now, and my pace is increasing somewhat; I read 6 pages in under an hour. I soon felt hungry again, so returned to the kitchen and made 卵かけご飯 (Tamogo kake gohan – “egg over rice”). Basically crack a raw egg in boiled rice and you’ve got Tamago kake gohan; soy sauce is optional. It’s actually a really popular breakfast meal in Japan, because is quick and cheap to make, and it’s healthy; perfect for the hectic lifestyle of the Japanese. So yeah, now I feel content. I don’t think I’ll be doing anything tomorrow; probably just put on another load of washing. I have however, made plans to go to Nijo castle in Kyoto, with Nadezhda; should be fun.

Day 132 - 9th of January

9:10pm セミナーハウス
天気:曇り
Another cloudy day spent inside doing practically nothing; aren’t I boring. Oh well, at least I’m saving money… I got up at 9, had breakfast and enjoyed doodling with Alex for a few hours on isribble.net; so cool. I also talked with Carly. Around 2, I was craving food again, so went up and made lunch. I chatted some more afterwards, and then had a nap, getting up at about 5. I decided to bleach my hair; that took about an hour. The difference is very subtle; my hair looks kinda orangey now. I only used half the bottle though, so I’m going to try again next week. At 6:30 I went up and had dinner. I mixed last night’s leftover meat with veggies and macaroni in a yakitori sauce; it tasted really good. I sat with Ash, while watching this horrendous show on TV, where contestants who obviously can’t sing, battle it out in front of a live audience, looking very foolish; people will do anything to get on TV. After dinner I read some more of Deltora.

Now am going to watch some Hetalia: Axis Powers. This is the anime, Alex, Ash, and many others are obsessed with. It presents an allegorical interpretation of historical events, particularly in the WWII era, and the countries are represented by anthropomorphic characters. ヘタリア (Hetalia) is a portmanteau combining へたれ (hetare - useless) and イタリア (Italia). This is to make light of Italy's apparent cowardice during World War II; thank you Wikipedia. The episodes are really short (5 mins), so I thought, what the heck, might as well take a look. I’ve watched a few episodes already, and it’s pretty interesting so far. There are only 49 episodes, so I might watch them all tonight, if the internet is kind. Tomorrow is Sunday, the beginning of a new week; a week where I will no longer be lazy…

Friday, 8 January 2010

Day 131 - 8th of January

10:26pm セミナーハウス
天気:曇り
Yay, finally finished reading the first chapter of Deltora Quest; 330 translations later… anyway, today was another short day. I woke up at 9, then fell back to sleep, and then didn’t get up again till 1; and I didn’t even go to bed that late! This is getting rather bothersome but still, might as well keep it up; at least for this week. Next week I will be much more productive; I hope. After lunch, I walked to uni, and checked my mailbox, finding a letter from Nanny and Poppy; a nice surprise. I then did some more grocery shopping at Kirindo and Fresco; oh how I love grocery shopping. Oh well, it got me out for a few hours. Getting back, I chatted with Alex, and then had a nap; did I really need it? At about 6:30 I went up and made dinner (spag bol), and watched Doraemon on TV. At about 8, I went up again and ate some bananas, and talked with Ash for a while, which was quite refreshing; like me, she hadn’t been doing very much. She gave me an ice cream, and I gave her a mask in return. I’ve just spent the last hour reading, and now feel very satisfied. Just going to do some exercise, shower, and then hop into bed…

Thursday, 7 January 2010

Day 130 - 7th of January

10:24pm セミナーハウス
天気:曇り
Just been watching movie trailers for the past hour; so many epic new movies coming out this year. Well, today was certainly a much longer day; I woke up at 9. Still, I didn’t really do that much… In the morning, I made eggs on toast for breakfast, and then vacuumed the floor. I had a nap at noon, and then talked with Alex and Carly for most of the afternoon, before going grocery shopping at Sanko. I had a late lunch at 4, and then enjoyed downloading a whole heap of new music from iTunes, including the Sweeny Todd OST. I did a bit of exercise, since my muscles were killing me (from exercising yesterday no doubt), and then read a bit more of Deltora Quest. It’s such a good feeling when I can actually understand most of it; even if I have to translate it before-hand. But believe me, translating is one thing, making sense of the sentence is a completely different matter; so I think I’m doing a pretty good job considering. I didn’t end up having dinner till about 8. Upon arriving in the kitchen, I noticed everyone was wearing masks, and recalled the email we got today informing us of a confirmed case of influenza in the seminar house.

So of course, as the Japanese have a need for cleanliness at their very core, it was expected that everyone wear a mask, at all times; except when eating of course. I didn’t have a mask in the kitchen at the time, but assured Yuji and Otousan that I would be wearing one afterwards. I’m just going to stay as far away from everyone as possible. I’m in a pretty good position here, as far as room location goes; secluded. Hiroshi is the only other person living in this section, and I know he’ll be very hygienic. Also, I don’t have to worry about Ryan contracting anything since he’s not here; I should be fine. So yeah, made gyudon for dinner, although I used pork meat not beef, so technically it’s not gyudon. Still come out the same way, and tasted great; I don’t know how I stuffed it up last time. So although I didn’t do much, I still very satisfied about the day. Hopefully I can get out and do something tomorrow; I really don’t know what though… anyway, time for shower, shave, and then bed!

Day 129 - 6th of January

9:04pm セミナーハウス
天気:曇り
Well so much for breaking the vicious cycle; I got up at 1 this afternoon. Well, I guess I’ts a step in the right direction; just finding it a bit hard to get to sleep early. Anyway, I got to do my laundry finally, and it got a few hours of sun before I had to bring it in. I had pancakes for breakfast/lunch, and even got some physical exercise in; I was happy about that. I talked with mum for a couple of hours, then went and had dinner (yakisoba). Onara hazukashikunai yo came on TV again (so funny), and then there was a show where contestants had to sing a song without the lyrics. After dinner, I read another 4 pages of Deltora Quest and now have 198 new vocab; it’s probably going to continue like this for a while. Hopefully once I start getting into the story it’ll get easier; the beginning’s a bit slow. As for tomorrow, I have to do grocery shopping; don’t have anything else planned. I aim to get up at 9, so we’ll see how that goes…

Tuesday, 5 January 2010

Day 128 - 5th of January

9:33pm セミナーハウス
天気:曇り
Again, I didn’t get up until 3 this afternoon. But fear not, this vicious cycle will come to an end presently because Ryan’s left, and he won’t be returning until Sunday. Now I can get back to going to sleep at reasonable hours of the night. So what did I do today… Well, I had breakfast and lunch together (cereal and then avocado, tomato, and rice on toast), while watching art-related programs on TV. I spent the rest of the afternoon stuffing around on the computer, reading web comics and the like, until Ryan left. Then I made my first real attempt at reading Deltora Quest – the Forest of Silence in Japanese; デロトラ・クエスト‐沈黙の森. And by reading, I mean having to translate every second word. Seriously, in an hour I only got through four pages, and had to translate 96 words; thank you iPod touch! I’m not going to give up though; even if it takes me a year. I feel I’ve barely scratched the surface when it comes to Japanese vocabulary, so this should help immensely.

After that, I went up to dinner, and felt lazy, so I just defrosted the stew; gosh it was packed with flavour. Aki and Kaoru returned from their home towns and the new RA, Hiroshi has moved in across from me. Watched TV for a little while, and then came back down here. Tomorrow I have to do laundry!!! I haven’t done it in weeks; I don’t know how I have so many clothes. I don’t know what else I want to do tomorrow; I guess I have to do grocery shopping. Classes start for the Japanese students tomorrow, and Carly told me she goes back to uni at the end of the week; so weird. I guess I have to remember it’s flipped in the northern hemisphere; they have their big break in the middle of the year; their summer. Anyway, early night tonight…
