Day 190 - 8th of March

天気:曇り
I got a good night’s sleep, and was able to get out of bed at 7:30 this morning. This meant that I had a good hour and an half more to study for my lesson test, and it certainly payed off. I actually found this test much easier than the first one we had (even the listening was easier to understand), and was finished just after the half an hour point. I went over to the convenience store, and picked up a snack, before going back to the lounge, and hanging out with Katie, Sarah, and Cate, getting some more kanji practice in. Reading and Writing came round, and we made a start on the story in the book, and covered some more grammar patterns; all one’s we’ve come across before thankfully. After that, I was free. I did some grocery shopping, and then I went home, had a quick lunch, and talked with Rachael for a while in the computer room, before making my way out again. I was going to meet Ash in the CIE lounge, since she was going to Joshin to buy a new MP3 player. Since I had never been, I was interested in joining her; on my way back to uni, I took some photos of this beautiful tree in full bloom now (I don’t think it’s a plum blossom), in front of Komatsu.

Unfortunately, it was a bit past our meeting time (2:30) when I got there, and not finding her, I immediately went back to my bike, to see if I could be clever and catch up with her on it. Well, I didn’t see her the whole way there; I must have been too far in front. When I got to Joshin, which is basically just across from Midori, I waited there for a little while. There wasn’t much to look at in all honesty; it mirrored Midori in many respects. Still no sign of Ash, I contemplated just going home, before deciding that I might as well look around some more shops since I was out there. So, I continued up the highway (in the direction of Kappazushi and the Lake), and went in a few of the places Ash had told me about. The first was called FAN 倶楽部 (Fan kurabu – Fan club ~ this is an example of "ateji" - kanji used phonetically to represent native or borrowed words. The kanji may or may not have anything to do with the original meaning of the word, and be chosen solely for phonetic value. In this case though, the kanji roughly translate as "together, fun, place", so you could argue whether that was a meaningful interpretation or not), and I had a field day inside. It sells second-hand clothes, books, guitars, CD’s, DVD’s, records, comics, games, and trading cards. The sheer amount of stuff they had was incredible.

I slowly made my way through the maze, looking for anything of interest to me. They had a corner filled with old poker machines, and a huge section with games from the Fami-Con (a.k.a the NES). There were thousands upon thousands, of Yugioh trading cards, some baseball cards, and I even spotted some Magic cards; that brought back memories. There were rows and rows of figures from every anime imaginable, all hanging up in little plastic bags, or displayed behind glass. In a cardboard box on the floor, I spotted some Final Fantasy books (my internal homing device doing its job), and found Final Fantasy VII: Official Establishment File, in relatively good condition. I contained images and information of the characters, and I thought it was a really good find; a collector’s item. Looking on the shelf above, I found some more Final Fantasy related books (mostly walkthroughs), and decided to pick up the one for FFX-2, since it was really cheap and compact. I browsed the rest of the store for a while, having a quick look at the CDs, and bypassing the rows and rows of manga, before making my purchases; I was very satisfied. The guy even gave me a discount on the FFVII book; score.

The next place I went to looked, from the outside, looked like a regular shop, but the inside was of… devious intent. The front quarter of the store was just like any other typical DVD/comic book store, but behind the big black curtains with the 18+ logo in red was a world of naughty pleasures. Ash had told me this, so I decided to check it out just for curiosities sake, and it was indeed very enlightening. I just thought the whole concept was bizarre; why have a tiny portion of your store dedicated to non-adult goods (there was no one in that section), when clearly the whole purpose of it is to go to the adult section. It seemed almost like a façade to me; you really wouldn’t know what they were actually selling from just looking at the exterior. Anyway, I came out empty-hand, but full-minded (well…) and made my way back home. I decided to stop by Top World to see if I could find the Old El Paso Taco Kit, I’d seen some girls using at the dorm; they told me they’d found it there. And sure enough, it was there; along with all the other hot sauces. I was over the moon actually; they had Nachos sauce too. However, it was wickedly expensive, so I held out on that, and just bought one of the kits; tacos this week!

Getting back, I had a good look at my purchases, before it was time for dinner; chicken parmigiana. I noticed that Yuji had left his cookies out, and let him know as soon as I saw him. He was making them around lunch time, and let me try one; they were… interesting. I stayed up in the kitchen until just before 8, and then went down to the lounge for Hugo’s movie night. Since he has so many movies on his portable hard drive, he has decided to have a viewing night once a week; he rigged up his laptop to connect with the TV. This week we watched Leon: The Professional, a French directed movie starring Jean Reno, Gary Oldman and a very young Natalie Portman; this was her debut film. I found it really enjoyable, and moving. It finished just after 10, and had attracted a number of viewers including Simon, Yuji, and Alvaro; a success. After an orange in the kitchen, I came back down, and got my blog as up-to-date as possible, until it was time for sleep.

Day 119 - 27th of December

11:36am 名城線
天気:晴れ
On the subway to Sakae; I only woke up an hour ago; I must have really needed the sleep. Alex only just got also, so it’ll take her a while to get to Sakae. In the mean time I’m going to get some brunch. Today is warm, and fine, and I’m feeling ready to pull another all nighter; at karaoke.

11:07am 栄
Still waiting for Alex; I’m in the station. Just got a text… I got food at a bakery (called Steiner) in Oasis 21 (that’s the name of the p
laza in Sakae station). Gosh, I love Japan’s bakeries; so good. I spent the rest of the time exploring; went in the NHK character store (had a lot of Ghibli merchandise too), the Jump shop (anime paraphernalia), and the Pokémon centre, then the park, and aqua spaceship again; very different in the day… Found Alex; she’s getting food from Makkas now. It’s so crazy here; in this Makkas, you actually have to separate the straw and lid from the cup, and then put them in separate bins. The line is way out the door, but the service is excellent (as it is everywhere); Alex will be out in no time…

1:47pm 名城線
We’re on the subway to 市役所 (shiyakusho – city hall), and from there walking to the castle.

4:00pm 名城線
On the train back to Sakae. Just came from the castle…

4:03pm 東山線
Just made the train; going to Nagoya station. Almost there already…

6:07pm 桜通線
We’re making our way to 大曽根 (Ozone), just because of the name. I think we’re going to eat dinner there. We joked that someone should have a place there called “The Ozone Layer”; that would be epic. We were just at Nagoya station, watching this amazing light display; got it on film.

6:17pm 名城線
This is so random, and so much fun. We’re only 4 stops away, on the Meijo line. The subway system here is so cool, and the fact that you can get a whole day pass for such a low price makes it all the more awesome. There’s so many different ways to get where you want to go, and everything connects to the loop line; Meijo.

9:01pm 名城線
Alex loves watching the guy work (aka, watching the conductor opening and closing the train doors). We are conducting a little experiment here; how long it takes to get all the way round the Meijo loop line. This is so awesome, and it’s a good time to upd
ate my journal. Mmm… just finished a Milky Way; thanks Alex… today has been so random. I really enjoyed the castle. We wandered around the gardens before entering the main grounds. There was a group of guys dressed as samurai for people to take photos with; they were very popular among the girls in particular. There was also a lot of construction going on; we found out that they are reconstructing the 本丸御殿 (Honmaru Goten – Hommaru Palace), next to the castle; it was burnt down during the WWII. They’re estimating it won’t be completed until 2018; I’ll have to come back then to see it. Oh yeah, and 2010 marks the 400th anniversary of the incorporation of Nagoya city; that’s pretty awesome.

Anyway, we explored the 天守閣 (tenshukaku – keep) for a while, and took in the views from the top, before making our way back down and out. I stopped at the gift shop outside and I bought myself another pin for my bag. After that, we went to Big Camera near Nagoya station, and I had a lot of enjoyment playing the piano there, while Alex listened. Then, we both had a lot of fun playing with Lego on a little kids table (it had four seats and boards incorporated into it). I built a tower and Alex a spaceship, and then we both wrote our names in Lego; that was so cool. After that, we went to Ozone and had an amazing dinner at this ramen place while watching the ice skating on TV.

I noticed that today was 仏滅 (Butstumetsu – Buddha’s Death), which is supposed to be a very unlucky day in the six day Buddhist cycle ~ 赤口 (shakku – unlucky for all activities, with only the period around noon being auspicious), 先勝 (sensho – lucky for the morning, but not the afternoon), 友引 (tomobiki – good day for business and lawsuits), 先負 (senbu – lucky day, but not in the morning), bustumetsu then, 大安 (taian – auspicious day); then it repeats. These days are displayed on many calendars, and that’s how I noticed it. Well, it certainly wasn’t an unlucky day for us. We joked that everyone elses bad luck left surplus good luck for us. Seriously though, the number of times we just made the train…

After dinner, we went to
another electronic shop nearby, and I convinced myself I wanted a DS lite; didn’t have enough money to buy anything then though. We then got on the train and started our experiment; we’re only one stop away from Ozone again now. After this, we’re going to jump on as many of the other lines as we can… And we’re done; it took almost 49 minutes! Alex said doing this experiment makes everything feel closer. Okay so now we’re moving onto our second experiment; transfer time and train times on other lines inside the loop. We’re going to end up in Motoyama, then take the subway to Hongo, and then bus it to where Alex lives and find Karaoke…

10:46pm 鶴見線
Alex just realised that the last bus is at 11; we won’t make it in time. We’re on the 鶴見線 (Tsurumi line) now, doing our crazy subway experiment…

11:05pm 名城線
Mission aborted… we were worried we wouldn’t make it to Sakae before the last train, so we’re going now there now…

11:44pm 栄
We’re in Karaoke now; got till 6 am. See you tomorrow…

Day 20 - 18th of Septemeber

6:20 pm セミナーハウス
天気:涼しい
Today, was a good day. After my 12 o'clock class, I went to get some money out of the ATM. Wow, I made my first online accommodation booking last night. Yes - Alex and I have decided where to go. We 're staying at 木もれび (Komorebi), in 雄琴 (Ogoto) near the city of Otsu at the edge of Lake Biwa (http://www.komolebi.jp/guestroom.html)!!! It's an 温泉 (onsen - hot spring) resort. So yeah, we're staying in a twin room, breakfast included, for two nights (Monday - Tuesday). It was the last room available on those nights, so I think it was meant to be. It's going to be so awesome. Now back to today ...

I wanted to check out an electronics store some people had recommended called "Midori". I didn't know exactly where it was, but it turned out to be really easy to find; just kept on walking down the road past Top World. Getting there, there was traffic control everywhere. Midori has just opened, and it's obviously very popular. The amount of cars going in and out was astounding. Pedestrians are ushered along, or brought to a halt by traffic cops, while they attempt to keep the flow of traffic as smooth as possible. Up the escalators I went, after receiving handouts from several of the store clerks, into a vast, bright room. It was huge, and white, with mirrors that created the illusion of being even bigger. Guess were I went first; hair straightener!!! I know, it's silly, but I had to have one; good price too. So after finding the one I liked, I browsed around a bit; they have everything. Then I went downstairs to the grocery department, bought some more washing powder and some body wash (aloe vera), xD. WOW, it was packed in the food section; the prices were really good though.

After leaving Midori, I walked all the way back to Avail (the clothes shop near the seminar houses). I finally got that shirt, along with some jeans, and scandals! I must have spent about an hour in there. I couldn't help myself; most items were reduced. Came back to the dorm, and tried out my straightener; works great. Diego came back soon after, and I told him about Midori. He decided he wanted to take a look, today. So we walked all the way over there, and looked around (again for me, lol). He didn't end up buying anything, but then I showed him downstairs, and almost immediately he wanted to look for mochi. 餅 (mochi) is a Japanese rice cake, made from glutinous rice and pounded into paste. This particular type is a sweet (I think it's filled with red bean paste). I haven't had too much of it, but it's now Diego's favourite snack. We found these really nice pink coloured ones, loved them, and went back in for more. Thoroughly satisfied, we made our way back to the dorm.

9:09 pm セミナーハウス
Oh my gosh!!! I just got an email from the innkeeper saying that it is overbooked!!! Luckily, he's given us a room in another inn (湯元館 - Yumotokan), which is right next to Komorebi (http://www.yumotokan.co.jp/world/english/guestroom/). * Huge sigh of relief *. .. I consider myself very lucky this point. The rate's the same, and we will still be able to enjoy the hot springs. So, it's all good.
